ART THRU THE LOOM
ATTL Art Through The Loom Guild was founded more than thirty-five years ago in the Northern Rio Grande Valley with the idea of training youth to work with traditional Chimayó weavers. It was the hope of members that by doing this, weaving traditions would be handed down through generations. The guild presents weaving exhibitions and promotes weaving and hand-spinning skills. Although the guild was begun on the premise of handing down traditional weaving practices, it is by no means limited to traditional looking pieces. Our focus is on weaving, spinning, and dyeing, and, to a lesser extent on techniques that use handwoven, handspun, or hand-dyed materials including knit and crochet items, dolls, and colcha. Guild members participate as a group in three to four shows and sales each year. We sponsor workshops and discussions focused on developing a successful fiber arts career. www.artthroughtheloom.com |

El Rancho de las Golondrinas (The Ranch of the Swallows) a historic rancho and now a living history museum, was strategically located on the Camino Real, the Royal Road that extended from Mexico City to Santa Fe. The ranch provided goods for trade and was a place where the caravans that plied the road would stop on their journey coming from or going to Santa Fe. It was a paraje, an official rest stop for travelers, and was even mentioned by the great military leader and governor, Don Juan Bautista de Anza, when he stopped here with his expeditionary force in 1780.

I always learn so much at the fleece judging. I'm grateful for the trend in open judging so you see the judge at work. Jay Begay was a new judge this year and he had some really interesting feedback on the classes I sat in on. The record was Sharon Ewing. — at Taos Wool Festival
I was, however, distracted at the judging by talking to other judges who were in the tent including Laura & Gordan Pierce, Estes Park's fleece show superintendents, Ric Rao superintendent of the Taos fleece show, and Patricia Quintana, a judge and people, critter, water, and land advocate. Barbara Merickel let us crawl in her sheep trailer so Patricia could share a bit about what makes the Navajo Churro as a unique breed. I'm working on a new edition of Rigid Heddle Road Trips with this snippet. (I bought my Debioullet fleeces from Barbara and they are part of my first mill spun yarn. Stay tuned! LG)

I talked to a number of vendors who had a good show, which is always good news. The Taos Festival is pretty special as it has a highly regional flavor. It was originally started thirty-five years ago as a way to connect wool growers of Northern New Mexico and Souther Colorado with the fiber traditions they support. Later Texas was added to the mix.
I appreciated this sign in The Natural Twist booth. www.thenaturaltwist.com Support your local supplier! — at Taos Wool Festival. A perennial favorite Shepherd's Lamb

I picked up my second Lana Dura. I love her pieces so much! www.lanadura.com — at Taos Wool Festival.
